Meghan McCain revealed that her connection with President Donald Trump has drastically improved in recent months, citing the “peace offering” he offered her shortly after Christmas last year.
Despite her past criticism of Trump, McCain has offered some praise for him. In December, she said Trump was correct in his bid for the United States to retake control of the Panama Canal. A few days later, she was notified through a text message that Trump wrote her “a really lovely letter” in which he thanked her for supporting his bid.

“And he signed it and said like, ‘thank you, Meghan,’ I don’t remember exactly what he said, it was like, ‘thank you, Meghan, thank you for your support, good luck, from President Trump,’ or something like that,” McCain explained on The Sage Steele Show. “And I was like, ‘That’s crazy, that’s crazy.’ I remember being like, ‘Wow, that feels like, you know, like, kind of a little bit of a peace offering.’”

McCain proceeded to detail messages she and the president shared with each other, which were “very positive.” After the “wild” about-face in her relationship with Trump, McCain asked her friend, National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard, about the change. Gabbard pointed to how Trump “almost died” during the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024.
“And not just her, but many people around him have told me that like, ‘he has a different worldview right now,’ so I have experienced that certainly right now,” McCain said.

McCain also praised the “vibe” the Trump administration is giving off in the White House and in Washington, D.C. She argued that each president sets a different tone in the Oval Office. For example, former President Joe Biden came off as “very old” and low-energy, whereas Trump has “a little more wild” energy that has spread across the district.
Following the assassination attempt on Trump, which occurred just days before the 2024 Republican National Convention, the president cited how he turned his head just before the gunfire grazed his right ear, saying, “I’m not supposed to be here.” When asked by the Washington Examiner’s Byron York if the attempt on his life changed his campaign, Trump answered “yes.”
