The police in Liverpool, England, said they detained a man in connection with a car that was driven through a crowd of people attending a soccer parade on Monday, bringing chaos to what began as a festive afternoon in the city.

Merseyside Police said on social media that they were contacted about 6 p.m. Monday after reports of a car plowing into a crowd on Water Street.

It was not immediately clear if there were injuries.

The police said the car stopped at the scene and the driver, who was identified only as a man, was detained.

The crash took place hours after the authorities had urged residents to stay safe while celebrating Liverpool FC’s victory parade.
